Tape CleaningSacks of returned tapes are delivered to the studio each day. On Wednesdays the sacks are emptied and their contents sorted. Address cards are removed from the wallets and the returning tapes sorted into types (news tapes, magazine1, mag 2, mag 3) and put into baskets. The mail sorter also picks up messages etc from listeners. Currently, 2 volunteers do this each week.
On Thursday mornings, the tape cleaning team put all the returned tapes through a de-gaussing process which wipes the recording from the tapes leaving them blank and ready for re-recording. They are then stacked appropriately. This takes up to two hours on Thursday morning at a time that suits both of the team of two involved (working on a 4 weekly rota).
